Burnout is not the end of your career; it is the moment life demands that your next step finally honours who you truly are.
There is a raw, quiet phase that comes after burnout. The crisis has passed, you are functioning again, and yet the old professional identity no longer fits. You are not ill, but you are not the woman you were before. This is where many women 40+ find themselves: asking in silence, “What now? What do I really want from my work, from this stage of my life?”
At the same time, global research like Deloitte’s report “Women @ Work 2022: A Global Outlook” shows that 53% of women say their stress levels are higher than a year before, and almost half report feeling burned out- proof that if you feel this way, you are not alone and you are not “too weak”; you are part of a wider reality.
I have been there. After seven years of running my first business, my energy, direction, and belief in myself collapsed.
I tried to return to employment, spent months in selection processes, reaching the last phase, and hit the subtle wall of “too experienced, too old, too something.” I felt lost and invisible. But that painful season became a turning point: I realised I could not go back to my old way of working. I had to create a new one.
My own reinvention – into a career coach and leadership mentor for women over 40 – did not happen in one glorious moment. It was a series of courageous, honest questions:
- What do I want my work to feel like now?
- Who do I deeply understand and genuinely want to serve?
The answer was clear: women like me. Women who have lived, fallen, sometimes burned out, but stood up again, and are ready to design a career that fits the woman they are today, not the young girl they were at 25. Working with this group gives me energy, meaning, connection, and deep fulfilment, because I know their world from the inside, and they can feel that too!
When I work with women after burnout, we do not chase quick fixes or fantasy careers. We do three powerful things instead:
- We tell the truth about what no longer works
- We name what they genuinely want from their next professional chapter
- We translate that into realistic, tangible options.
It is not only about “What do I dream of?” but also “Where can I actually use and monetize my experience, my strengths, my talents, and what do I need to learn to build the bridge there?” We explore the market, not to limit them, but to connect desire with opportunity: sometimes that becomes a portfolio career, sometimes a pivot into a new field, sometimes a redesigned leadership role, sometimes a business of their own.
The key is the sweet spot where desire, competence, market need, and this life stage truly meet.
Because yes, we absolutely dream in some exercises, we bring old dreams back to the table, we ask what your 25‑year‑old self longed for, and what your 45‑year‑old self knows now. And then we do the brave, adult work of choosing what is possible and sustainable. Not every dream fits every season of life. You might not become a stewardess at 45 (although I know from the experience that KLM hires midlife ladies for long-haul services;) but you might build a role that still lets you travel, connect, support, speak, teach, or lead in ways that genuinely light you up and that the world is willing to pay for. The point is not endless fantasy; the point is agency. We turn vague longing into grounded, concrete next steps because you are allowed to build a career that supports your energy, your values, your future, and that also makes financial and practical sense.
The question is not “Can I?” The real question is: Am I honest with myself about what I truly want next, what I can realistically build from where I stand today, and be brave enough to move towards it, one thoughtful step at a time?
If you are in that in‑between space – no longer burned out, but not yet clear on your next step – I hear you! This is the work I am here to do with you. There is hope. There is a path. And you do not have to walk it alone.
