Identity

Last week I had an interesting conversation with someone who measured me with his own standards. And that made me write this piece which comes down to one thing: identity.

I heard the other day that when you go in life without a plan or a purpose, you create a survival mentality. You have no vision for yourself, and very often you burn out. You are not motivated at all. You can’t find your way and you don’t know where to start. You go with the flow. And I totally agree with it.  Listen, I was there too. It was so difficult to get rolling. There were empty days I didn’t feel like having a direction in my business whatsoever. But I want to tell you something – identity is the starting point. Period. When you focus on what’s important, you don’t become a victim of the external factors that get in your way. With the identity, you start to act with purpose and clarity and receive insights that propel you forward. Do you agree?

I am sure that success (whatever you define it to be for you!) flows from understanding who you are. Success is the result of gaining a clear understanding of your identity. Discovering what you love (or at least like) to do and learning how to do it so well that you create value in this world. Yes, VALUE. You have unique gifts and you must learn how to dig dip inside yourself to bring it to the surface and use to the greater benefit. I did. I don’t look back.

And I would like to emphasize here that no matter where you come from, no matter what your current circumstances are, you are limited only by our own thinking and choices. Remember, your greatest asset is yourself. Accept yourself, treat yourself well, and stop comparing yourself to others. You need to have a strong sense of self if you want to live a fulfilled life and have a satisfying career or business.

Identity is the starting point of living your life of purpose and passion.

So, my dear, create a life based on your passions and strengths, not someone else’s ideas of who you are, what you should do, how you should look like and behave. If you don’t define yourself, others will do it for you. And when you accept these labels you limit your potential and opportunities. Not a good idea! You need to define yourself from the inside-out. Don’t allow others to write your story for you. It’s time to take full ownership of your life. Your OWN life!

And how about you? Do you still allow others to measure you by their own standards?
